Fun with Google Translator

Much of what I do is building Flash UI's for web services that communicate in some form of XML. XML itself is, to some people I suppose, hard to read and understand, so my job is to try to make it look like the graphic designer wants it to look like. Sometimes I have no graphic designer to work with, so this is the result:



How it works is you type something in some language you speak in the top box, tell it what language you wrote that in by clicking a box in the top row (using the little international language abbreviations as your guide) then click the bottom row box which corresponds to the language you want to translate your statement into.

Hit "translate" and the flash widget sends the appropriate arguments directly to google translator (after stripping out illegal characters you may have typed in-or trying to anyway) then displays the result in the bottom box. A fun thing to do is then paste the bottom box text into the top box and swap the box settings to see how it translates back.

Turns out it was built by a development company called Don Mills road, which was called that because it ran along the river Don to these mills. So Don Mills, the commercial juggernaut and clearing house capital of Canada, is a celtic goddess' enterprise. Sometimes I think we are actually travelling backwards through time so these ironic jokes can be written about our various enterprises. I wish it was named after Don Most though. Don Most Ontario sounds better.

my flash coding skills

Almost everything I make is buried in something else, behind a firewall, or really easy to take for granted. I made this game from scratch in about a day, and I was proud of it so here it is. (Icons can be replace with anything so it was the election and i had some fun with it) Obviously a take on bejewelled. How you play is you click on a face, then click another one to try to swap places. Idea being you need to make a row vertically or horizontally of the same faces to eliminate that row.

kidSong-this one I made for my daughter, Isobel.

countrySong-This was an experiment where I recorded an acoustic guitar riff, and found that by bookmatching it (butting it up against itself in reverse) it kind of made an interesting counterpoint. Literally.
